About Hope Mountain

Rising above the borderlands of North Wales, this prominent Marilyn offers a rewarding ascent through the heather of Waun-y-Llyn Country Park. Its 330-metre summit provides a surprising vantage point, looking out across the Cheshire Plain toward the Mersey, contrasted against the high, undulating ridges of the nearby Clwydian Range.

Did You Know?

  • Known in Welsh as Mynydd yr Hob, the name is derived from 'hob', a traditional local measure of grain or land. The English name 'Hope' is a phonetic adaptation of this original Welsh title.
  • From the trig point, the view to the north-east is dominated by the industrial skyline of the Mersey and the Liverpool cathedrals, while the landmark Jubilee Tower atop Moel Famau is clearly visible to the west.
  • The summit area encompasses Waun-y-Llyn Country Park, where a small quarry-hole lake now provides a vital habitat for Great Crested Newts among the old sandstone outcrops.
  • Despite standing at just 330 metres, it is officially classified as a Marilyn because the land drops at least 150 metres on all sides, making it a far more significant landmark than its modest elevation suggests.
  • It is a hill that punches well above its weight; you get the expansive, long-distance views of a much higher peak without the lung-bursting effort usually required to earn them.
