About Croaghmore (Great Blasket Island)

Rising as the highest point of the abandoned Great Blasket Island, this steep-sided Marilyn offers an isolated, maritime hiking experience. The sharp, grassy ridge provides dramatic Atlantic exposure, overlooking the ruined village below. It is a lonely, evocative summit where the silence is broken only by the wind and nesting seabirds.

Did You Know?

  • Derived from the Irish An Chruach Mhór, the name translates to "The Great Peak," a title it earns as the highest point of the entire Blasket archipelago.
  • The summit provides a poignant perspective over the ruins of the island’s village, home to a legendary literary community including Peig Sayers and Tomás Ó Criomhthain before its 1953 evacuation.
  • Looking west from the top, you can spot the remote lighthouse on An Tiaracht and the unmistakable silhouette of Inis Tuaisceart, famously known as "The Dead Man" or "The Sleeping Giant."
  • To the east, the view across the Blasket Sound is dominated by the massive cliffs of Slea Head and the distant, often cloud-shrouded peak of Mount Brandon on the Dingle Peninsula.
  • While the climb is short, the real crux of the expedition is the Atlantic swell; many a walker has reached the pier at Dunquin only to find the "highway" to the hill is closed for the day.
