Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish Cnoc an Chroí, meaning 'Hill of the Heart'. This likely refers to its central, rounded appearance when viewed from the lowlands of the Kingdom of Mourne.
  • Its isolated position south of the main range provides a unique profile of the high peaks; looking north, you can clearly identify the jagged granite tors of Slieve Binnian and the slopes of Slieve Muck.
  • Standing at 306 metres, it only just exceeds the 1,000-foot mark. It is a classic example of a Marilyn—a hill with at least 150 metres of prominence—proving that a peak doesn't need massive altitude to dominate its immediate landscape.
  • If the summit were just five metres lower, it would lose its status as a Marilyn and likely half of its annual visitors, though the view of the fishing boats off Kilkeel would remain stubbornly identical.
