Did You Know?

  • The hill sits on the legendary Offa's Dyke Path, a 177-mile National Trail. It traces the 8th-century border defense built by the King of Mercia to keep his Welsh neighbors at arm's length.
  • Its summit provides a stunning vantage point over the Vale of Clwyd toward the distant peaks of Eryri. The landscape here is shaped by Silurian gritstone, providing a rugged contrast to the lush valley floor below.
  • You can easily spot the stump of the Jubilee Tower on the nearby Moel Famau from the cairn. That monument was intended to be a grand Egyptian pylon, but it proved remarkably susceptible to the local gravity and wind.
  • Moel Gyw is classified as a 'HuMP,' which is a hill with a prominence of at least 100 meters. It’s an elite club for hills that aren't quite mountains but still demand a respectable amount of huffing and puffing.
  • The name translates to 'Chick Hill,' which sounds suspiciously like a trap for birdwatchers. In reality, the only 'chicks' you'll find are skeptical-looking sheep who will silently judge your choice of mid-layers for such a short walk.
