About Tristia [Troiste]

Rising as a prominent heathery outlier east of the main Nephin Beg range, this Marilyn offers a rugged, boggy ascent. Though modest in height, its isolation ensures a sense of wilderness. From the summit, the vast waters of Lough Conn stretch out to the east, contrasted by the massive bulk of Nephin nearby.

Did You Know?

  • The name is likely an anglicization of the Irish Troiste, which can refer to a foot-measure or a tripod, perhaps indicating a historic boundary marker or a specific rock formation on these lower slopes.
  • Because the hill is classified as a Marilyn—meaning it has at least 150 metres of prominence—the views over the northern Mayo plains and the nearby Ox Mountains are surprisingly expansive.
  • The summit provides an excellent vantage point to study the eastern face of Nephin, Ireland’s highest standalone mountain, which dominates the skyline to the south.
  • While Nephin attracts the weekend crowds, Tristia offers the kind of deep solitude where the only witness to your progress is the occasional disinterested raven.
