About Knockatee [Cnoc an tSi]

Rising sharply above the northern coast of the Beara Peninsula, this rugged Marilyn offers a character far grander than its modest 330-metre height. Its steep, heathery slopes provide a short but strenuous pull to a summit overlooking the Kenmare River, with clear views across to the high peaks of the Iveragh Peninsula.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name Cnoc an tSí translates as 'Hill of the Fairies.' In local folklore, a 'sí' is a mound or dwelling place of the aos sí, the supernatural race of the Tuatha Dé Danann, marking the hill as a site of spiritual significance.
  • The summit offers an exceptional vantage point over the Kenmare River estuary, with the jagged skyline of the Iveragh Peninsula and the distant MacGillycuddy's Reeks visible to the north across the water.
  • Despite its low elevation, Knockatee qualifies as a Marilyn because it drops at least 150 metres on all sides, standing in relative isolation from the higher Caha Mountains to the south.
  • The hill's proximity to the coast means it serves as a reliable barometer for Atlantic weather; if the summit disappears into the mist, rain is usually less than twenty minutes away.
