About Tully Mountain

Rising abruptly from the Connemara coastline near Renvyle, this rugged Marilyn offers an exceptional vantage point for its modest height. Known locally as Letter Hill, its heathery slopes provide a short but rewarding ascent with commanding views across the Killary Harbour entrance and the jagged silhouettes of the Twelve Bens.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name, Cnoc Leitreach, translates as 'Hill of the Sloping Land,' a reference to the 'leitir' or wet, sloping hillsides characteristic of the Connemara landscape.
  • From the summit, the view west encompasses the islands of Inishbofin and Inishshark, while the massive bulk of Mweelrea dominates the northern horizon across the mouth of Killary Harbour.
  • Despite its relatively low elevation, the mountain is classified as a Marilyn because its summit rises significantly above the surrounding low-lying bogland, making it a prominent landmark on the Renvyle Peninsula.
  • The hill is designated as a Special Area of Conservation to protect its Atlantic blanket bog and wet heaths, which are sensitive habitats for local flora and birdlife.
  • At just 356 metres, it is one of the few places in the region where you can gain a bird's-eye view of the Atlantic without having to commit to a full day of climbing in the Twelve Bens.
