About Miskish Mountain [Mioscais]

Standing at the southwestern tip of the Beara Peninsula, this rugged sandstone peak overlooks the Atlantic and the historic copper mines of Allihies. Though modest in height, its position as a Marilyn provides a sense of isolation, offering clear sights over Kenmare River toward the Iveragh Peninsula and the distant Skellig Islands.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name Sliabh Mioscais translates to the 'Mountain of Malice' or 'Grudge.' While the exact origin is debated, local lore often links the name to the mythical Milesian invaders, who supposedly faced supernatural storms conjured by the Tuatha Dé Danann upon reaching these shores.
  • The western slopes were the centre of a 19th-century industrial boom; the ruined engine houses and spoil heaps of the Allihies copper mines remain visible from the summit, marking a sharp contrast between the wild moorland and former heavy industry.
  • Despite giving its name to the entire range, Miskish Mountain is not the highest point in the Slieve Miskish Mountains; it is overtopped by its eastern neighbours, Knockoura and Knockgour.
  • The summit offers a commanding view of the deep-water harbour at Castletownbere and the long, protective spine of Bere Island sitting in Bantry Bay.
  • Given the translation 'Mountain of Malice,' visitors might expect a particularly hostile reception, though the most malicious thing usually encountered is a sudden Atlantic squall or a particularly stubborn patch of gorse.
