About Farbreiga [Fear Breige]
Rising as a prominent outlier on the southern fringes of the Nephin Beg range, this peat-clad Marilyn overlooks the dark waters of Lough Beltra. Despite its modest height, the summit provides a clear vantage point across wild Mayo boglands toward the conical silhouette of Nephin and the distant Ox Mountains.

Did You Know?
- •The name is derived from the Irish Fear Bréige, meaning 'False Man' or 'Mock Man.' This typically refers to a summit cairn or rock formation that looks like a human figure from a distance, particularly when viewed through shifting mountain mist.
- •While technically part of the Nephin Beg range, the hill is an isolated outpost separated from the main northern massif by the valley containing the R312 road.
- •The summit offers a unique perspective of Nephin’s massive western face, as well as views southwest toward the pyramid of Croagh Patrick and the islands of Clew Bay.
- •In keeping with the character of the Mayo backcountry, the terrain is exceptionally boggy; a successful ascent usually involves navigating as much standing water as solid ground.
