About Slievecorragh [An Sliabh Corrach]

Rising above the western edges of the Wicklow Hills, this 418m peak offers a quieter alternative to the busier granite massifs nearby. Characterised by its rugged, grassy slopes, it provides a grandstand view across the Glen of Imaal towards the imposing bulk of Lugnaquilla and the neighbouring Slieve Gad.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish An Sliabh Corrach, which translates as 'the rugged' or 'unsteady mountain', likely a reference to the broken, uneven nature of the terrain found on its slopes.
  • Its position on the western fringe of the uplands provides a clear view into the Glen of Imaal, a valley used extensively as a military firing range, backed by the massive western cliffs of Lugnaquilla.
  • Despite its modest height, Slievecorragh is classified as a Marilyn due to its significant topographical prominence of 163 metres, making it a standalone feature that feels higher than the map suggests.
  • While the Irish name implies the mountain itself might move, the only thing truly unsteady is likely the footing of a walker navigating the thick gorse that guards parts of its lower flanks.
