Did You Know?
- •The Irish name Cnoc an Fhothraigh translates as 'hill of the ruin', likely referring to ancient stone structures or abandoned shelters once located on its slopes.
- •As the high point of the Arra Mountains, the summit provides an excellent vantage point to view where the River Shannon cuts through the landscape between here and the hills of East Clare.
- •Look west across the deep waters of Lough Derg to spot the summit of Moylussa, the highest point in County Clare, or look south toward the much larger bulk of Keeper Hill.
- •The area is famous for its high-quality slate; the nearby quarries at Portroe once supplied roofing materials for major buildings across Ireland and the UK.
- •Despite being the highest point in the range, the summit remains a quiet alternative to the more popular trails found in the nearby Galtee or Comeragh Mountains.
