About Tountinna [Tonn Toinne]

A modest but commanding summit, this Marilyn serves as the high point of the Arra Mountains. While telecommunications masts dominate the immediate top, the reward is a vast perspective over Lough Derg, stretching toward the Silvermines and the Slieve Aughty mountains across the water.

Did You Know?

  • The name stems from the Irish Tonn Toinne, meaning 'Wave of the Wave.' According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn, it was here that Fintan mac Bóchra sought refuge in a cave to survive the mythological Great Flood, eventually living for five thousand years to preserve the history of Ireland.
  • Near the summit stands the Laghtea Cairn, a prehistoric burial mound known locally as 'Fintan’s Grave,' which occupies the highest ground near the trig pillar.
  • The panoramic view from the top allows walkers to trace the River Shannon as it enters Lough Derg, with the sharp profiles of the Slieve Bernagh range clearly visible directly to the west.
  • Despite its mythological status as a sanctuary from a world-ending deluge, the modern summit is now perhaps better known for providing high-quality mobile phone reception to the surrounding parishes.
