About Cummeen

Rising above the village of Camp at the neck of the Dingle Peninsula, this substantial Marilyn offers a quieter alternative to the famous peaks further west. Its broad, often boggy slopes reward walkers with a magnificent vista across the Maharees and the sweeping sands of Tralee Bay.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Irish Coimín, which translates to 'commonage' or 'little valley,' suggesting its historical use as shared grazing land for local communities.
  • Situated at the eastern end of the Dingle Peninsula, Cummeen acts as a western outlier of the Slieve Mish Mountains, separated from the higher Baurtregaum by the deep notch of the Finglas River valley.
  • From the summit, the northern view is particularly striking, looking down over the sandy spit of the Maharees and across the waters of Tralee Bay towards the coast of North Kerry.
  • With a prominence of 253 metres, it qualifies as a Marilyn, making it one of the more significant summits on the peninsula for those tracking Irish peaks of notable stature.
  • Given its position on the first line of Atlantic defence, the summit is an excellent place to observe the local horizontal rain, which usually arrives several minutes before you have managed to find your waterproofs.
