About Mullaghmesha [Mullach Meise]

Rising above the valley of the River Ilen, this rugged sandstone peak provides an excellent vantage point over West Cork. Characterised by heathery slopes and rocky outcrops, it offers a quieter alternative to the better-known Shehy Mountains, with a summit marked by a trig pillar that overlooks the distant waters of Bantry Bay.

Did You Know?

  • The Irish name Mullach Meise translates as 'summit of the dish' or 'platter'. This likely refers to the relatively level, broad character of the hilltop compared to the sharper ridges found elsewhere in the region.
  • From the summit, you can look directly west toward the Caha Mountains on the Beara Peninsula, while to the south, the River Ilen can be seen winding its way toward Skibbereen and the Atlantic coast.
  • The hill is a significant drainage point for the local landscape; the River Ilen, one of the primary rivers of West Cork, has its headwaters on the southern slopes of this massif.
  • Walkers often combine an ascent of this hill with the nearby Nowen Hill to the northeast, crossing the high ground that separates the Bantry and Drimoleague districts.
  • The terrain is a classic West Cork mix of thick heather and hidden bog, ensuring that even on a short walk, your choice of waterproof footwear will be thoroughly tested.
