About Great Sugar Loaf

Rising sharply above the N11 corridor, this distinctive quartzite peak offers a miniature mountaineering experience. Its iconic conical profile, often mistaken for an extinct volcano, provides a steep but rewarding scramble to a rocky summit. On clear days, the panoramic views across the Irish Sea toward the Welsh coast are exceptional.

Did You Know?

  • The hill’s Irish name is Beann Chualann, though it is also historically known as Ó Cualann. The English name dates back to at least the 18th century, comparing the hill's steep, symmetrical profile to the 'loaves' in which refined sugar was once sold.
  • While the shape suggests a volcanic origin, the peak is actually composed of Cambrian quartzite. This hard, metamorphic rock is far more resistant to weathering than the surrounding micaceous shales, which has allowed the hill to remain a prominent 'monadnock' while the land around it eroded.
  • The summit offers a commanding perspective of the Wicklow coastline; looking north, the view extends over the Poolbeg chimneys to Howth Head, while the western horizon is dominated by the sprawling plateau of Djouce and the Vartry Reservoir.
  • Despite its modest height of 501 metres, it is classified as a Marilyn due to its significant topographical prominence, standing as an isolated sentinel between the Wicklow Mountains and the sea.
  • On a sunny Sunday, the final rocky scramble becomes one of the busiest bottlenecks in the country, as the proximity to Dublin frequently encourages hikers to attempt the scree slopes in remarkably unsuitable footwear.
