Did You Know?

  • The Irish name Cnoc Osaidh translates literally as 'Hill of Osaidh', likely referring to an obscure personal name or a derivation of 'osadh', suggesting a place of rest or a temporary truce.
  • Its classification as a Marilyn—a peak with a drop of at least 150 metres on all sides—ensures the summit feels impressively isolated from the higher mountains to the north.
  • The summit serves as an excellent vantage point for viewing the coastal topography of Derrynane Bay and the uninhabited Scariff and Deenish Islands out in the Atlantic.
  • In the absence of a formal trail, the ascent usually involves navigating a classic Kerry landscape of 'hags and holes'—a testing mix of peat hags and hidden boggy depressions.
