Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Irish Com na Cróine, meaning the hollow of the dark brown or swarthy place, likely referring to the deep, shadowed corrie on its northern flank.
  • It is also known as Coomanassig (Com an Asaig), translated as the 'hollow of the waterfall' due to the impressive cascade that drains the upper basin into the valley below.
  • The summit provides a clear perspective of the Iveragh interior, with particularly fine views of the jagged ridge leading toward Knocknagantee and the distant MacGillycuddy's Reeks to the northeast.
  • Given its multiple names and remote location, the hill remains one of the quieter peaks in the region, ensuring the only company you are likely to have is the occasional hardy mountain sheep.
