About Holyhead Mountain [Mynydd Twr]

Rising as the highest point on Holy Island, this coastal Marilyn offers a rugged, heathery ascent far removed from the high peaks of the mainland. Despite its modest 220m height, the summit of Mynydd Twr feels remarkably airy, overlooking the dramatic quartzite cliffs of South Stack and the Irish Sea.

Did You Know?

  • The name Mynydd Twr is Welsh for 'Tower Mountain.' This refers to the remains of a Roman signal station that once crowned the summit, serving as a lookout post to monitor the coast for raiders during the late 4th century.
  • The summit is enclosed by the ramparts of Caer y Twr, an Iron Age hillfort. Its stone walls are particularly well-preserved on the northern side, where they integrate with the natural rock outcrops to create a formidable defensive position.
  • On a clear day, the trig point offers a spectacular panorama that includes the Isle of Man and the Wicklow Mountains across the Irish Sea. Looking back towards the Welsh mainland, the sharp peaks of Snowdonia (Eryri) are clearly visible, including the Carneddau and the Glyderau.
  • The mountain is composed of Holyhead Quartzite, an extremely hard, ancient rock. These white and grey outcrops provide some of the finest traditional sea-cliff climbing in the UK on the nearby Gogarth precipices.
  • While the climb is short, the mountain's exposed position on the edge of the Irish Sea means it acts as a wind magnet; the summit trig pillar is often the only thing keeping walkers from being buffeted halfway to Dublin.
