About Craig Llyn Llagi

Rising steeply above the dark waters of its namesake tarn, this rugged Moelwyn peak offers a quieter alternative to the nearby honey-pots. Its rocky escarpment provides a dramatic balcony over Cwm Nantmor, with the jagged silhouette of Cnicht and the massive bulk of Yr Aran dominating the immediate skyline.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Welsh as the 'Crag of the Lake of Llagi'. While the exact etymology of Llagi is debated, it likely stems from the Welsh 'llaca', referring to the silty or muddy margins of the glacial lake sitting directly beneath the cliffs.
  • The summit acts as a prime vantage point for viewing Cnicht from the east, an angle that reveals its true ridge-like proportions against the expansive peat moorlands stretching towards Moel Druman.
  • Llyn Llagi, which sits roughly 150 metres below the summit, is a classic glacial cirque lake surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides; it remains a popular, if cold, destination for wild swimmers making the trek up from the Nantgwynant valley.
  • The surrounding terrain is characteristically Moelwyn, consisting of a complex tapestry of heather, hidden bog, and sudden rock outcrops that requires careful navigation when the cloud drops.
  • The approach serves as an excellent litmus test for one's gear; if your boots remain dry after navigating the saturated troughs surrounding the crag, they are likely equal to anything else the Welsh weather can provide.
