About Beinn Bhreac
Rising from the rugged moorland of northern Jura, this 468-metre Marilyn offers a wilder perspective of the island than its famous southern neighbours. The ascent across peat and heather is rewarded with a distinct look at the Corryvreckan whirlpool to the north and the jagged, distant skyline of the Paps.

Did You Know?
- •The name Beinn Bhreac translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'speckled hill'. This descriptive title refers to the mottled appearance of the slopes, where patches of grey quartzite rock break through the dark heather and grasses common to the Jura wilderness.
- •Although overshadowed by the iconic Paps of Jura to the south, the summit provides a superior vantage point for viewing the Gulf of Corryvreckan. On clear days, the white water of the world's third-largest whirlpool can be seen churning between the northern tip of Jura and the island of Scarba.
- •Standing as a Marilyn—a peak with at least 150 metres of prominence—this hill marks a significant high point in the remote, trackless interior that separates Loch Tarbert from the northern coast.
- •Navigating the approach requires a keen eye for deer tracks; with a red deer population vastly outnumbering the island's human inhabitants, the locals with four legs have significantly more experience in finding the driest lines through the peat bogs.
