About Cul Mor

Rising from the Torridonian sandstone of Inverpolly, this Corbett offers a rugged, sprawling alternative to its more famous neighbours. Its twin-summited plateau provides an exceptional vantage point for looking down upon the sharp peaks of Suilven and Stac Pollaidh, surrounded by the distinctive, water-streaked landscape of the Inverpolly lochans.

Did You Know?

  • The name Cùl Mòr comes from the Scottish Gaelic, where 'Cùl' translates to 'back' or 'rear' and 'Mòr' means 'big' or 'great'. It is usually interpreted as the 'Great Back', likely distinguishing it from its smaller southern neighbour, Cùl Beag.
  • While the bulk of the mountain is composed of red Torridonian sandstone, the summit plateau is capped with white Cambrian quartzite. This geological layering creates a stark contrast in terrain, with the rugged sandstone lower slopes giving way to a shattered, pale rock surface at the top.
  • From the summit trig point, walkers earn a unique 'top-down' perspective of Suilven. While most views of Suilven highlight its vertical scale, from Cùl Mòr you can see the true layout of its long, narrow ridge and the sheer isolation of its position amidst the Fionn Loch.
  • The usual ascent follows an excellently engineered stalker's path from the A835, which leads into the high corrie of Coire Dubh. This makes it one of the most accessible peaks in the region, despite its remote appearance and significant elevation.
  • Despite being the highest point in the Inverpolly Forest, it remains the perennial 'middle child' of Sutherland—slightly too tall to be overlooked, but lacking the celebrity status of the iconic shark-fin ridge sitting just a few miles to the north.
