About Meall Gorm

Situated in the heart of the Fannichs, this broad, rounded Munro offers a gentler profile than its jagged neighbours. Part of a celebrated high-level ridge, its stony plateau provides an excellent vantage point across the desolate expanses of the Dirrie Mòr and the towering peak of Sgùrr Mòr.

Did You Know?

  • The name Meall Gorm translates from Scottish Gaelic as 'Blue Hill'. In Gaelic, 'gorm' is a versatile colour term often used to describe the hazy, blue-grey appearance of distant mountains or the lush green of high-altitude grasses.
  • It is most frequently climbed as the central peak of the 'Big Fannichs' circuit, usually approached from the A835 and paired with its neighbours An Coileachan and Sgùrr Mòr.
  • The summit offers a spectacular perspective on the massive eastern corries of Sgùrr Mòr, while the remote waters of Loch Fannich dominate the view to the south and the bulky mass of Ben Wyvis is visible to the east.
  • The Fannichs are largely composed of Moine schists, which weather into more rounded, mossy ridges compared to the rugged Torridonian sandstone peaks found further west in the Fisherfield Forest.
  • The summit plateau is famously broad and level; in heavy mist, the transition from a mountain ascent to a high-altitude stroll across a featureless field is almost imperceptible.
