If you shout a name across a valley for a thousand years, it’s eventually going to come out sounding a bit strange. That is essentially what has happened to the British uplands. We walk these hills every weekend, we know their silhouettes by heart, and we use their names as shorthand for some of our best days out. But if you actually stop to listen to what we’re saying, a lot of it doesn't make any sense.

The fells are covered in names that have been handed down, chewed up, and simplified until the original meaning is buried under layers of modern English. It’s a messy, human process. It’s what happens when a Viking settler, a Celtic farmer, and a Victorian mapmaker all try to describe the same piece of rock. The results aren't just names; they are a record of how we’ve misunderstood the landscape for centuries.

The Wildcat’s Ghost: Catbells

Catbells is the gateway to the fells for most of us. It’s the first "real" summit many people ever stand on, and it’s a name that feels warm and approachable. It sounds like something from a storybook—light, gentle, and a bit whimsical.

But the name originally had a much sharper edge to it. It’s a corruption of "Cat Bields." In the old dialect of the fells, a "Bield" was a shelter or a den. Long before the crowds arrived, this ridge was the "Shelter of the Wild Cat." We’re talking about the European Wildcat—a creature that makes a modern tabby look like a stuffed toy. These cats were fierce, elusive, and they owned these crags. When we climb Catbells today, we’re walking through a landscape that was once a genuine feline stronghold. The cats have been gone for centuries, but the name is a permanent, slightly distorted echo of a much wilder past.

The Fairy Gateway: Schiehallion

If Catbells feels like a storybook, Schiehallion in the Scottish Highlands is the literal version. It has one of the most distinctive profiles in the country, a perfect conical peak that seems to dominate the landscape.

The name comes from the Gaelic Sìdh Chailleann, which translates to the "Fairy Hill of the Caledonians." To the ancient tribes, this wasn't just a high point to bag for a list; it was a literal portal to another world. They believed it was the dwelling place of the Sìth—the fairies of Scottish folklore. There is a lovely irony in the fact that while the ancients saw it as a portal to another world, 18th-century scientists used the mountain as a giant paperweight for physics, weighing the entire Earth against the mountain’s bulk. It’s the ultimate clash of logic and superstition: using a fairy hill to calculate the mass of the planet.

The Battle for Blencathra

Then there’s Blencathra. It’s one of the most imposing sights in the country, a mountain that looks like it was built from the ground up to be a fortress. But for the better part of two centuries, it suffered through a serious identity crisis. Most of us would have known it as "Saddleback."

"Blencathra" is a glorious, ancient piece of the Cumbric language—a sister to modern Welsh. Blaen is a summit, and Cathrau is often thought to mean "chairs" or "fortresses." It’s a name that fits the rock; it sounds heavy and old. "Saddleback" was the name given by tourists and mapmakers who looked at it from a distance, thought it looked like a horse’s saddle, and decided that was enough. While the locals were looking at the "Fortress of the Chairs," the Victorian tourists arrived, looked at their horses, and essentially decided, "Looks like a seat, doesn't it? Let’s call it that and go for tea." It’s the ultimate gap between the people who lived on the rock and the people who just looked at it through a telescope.

The Yellow Moor: Helvellyn

While we’re on the subject of Cumbric roots, we have Helvellyn. It’s arguably the most famous ridge walk in the Lakes, but the name is often glossed over as just "one of those mountain words."

In reality, it’s a sister to Blencathra in its linguistic origin. It likely comes from the Cumbric Hal (highland or moor) and Velyn (yellow). Before it became a playground for scramblers and hikers, it was simply the "Yellow Highland," named for the specific color of the mountain grasses and mosses that turn a pale, golden yellow in the autumn. It’s a beautifully simple description of a color that has survived through the centuries.

The "Old Man" Who Never Existed

The Old Man of Coniston is perhaps the most famous "person" on the map. We’ve all grown up with the idea that the name describes a craggy face or a slumped profile in the rock. It’s a lovely bit of folklore, but it’s entirely based on a mishearing.

The name is almost certainly a mangled version of the Celtic Alt Maen. In the languages spoken here long ago, Alt meant a high place or a cliff, and Maen meant a stone. Alt Maen (The High Stone) sounds like the title of an epic fantasy novel. "The Old Man," on the other hand, sounds like a local character who’s likely to tut at you for wearing the wrong gaiters while he complains about the mist. We took something majestic and turned it into someone you'd find propping up a bar, just because we couldn't handle the Celtic vowels.

The Bald Mountain: Scafell

Scafell is the big, brooding neighbor to its higher sibling, Scafell Pike. It’s a mass of dark, vertical rock, and the name is another classic case of a literal Norse description being softened by time.

It’s derived from the Old Norse Skalli (meaning a bald head or a shieling) and Fjall (fell). It was originally the "Bald Mountain," a reference to the stark, lifeless rock of the summit plateau. It’s the same impulse that gave us the "Old Man"—taking a very literal description of a "bald head" and turning it into a proper noun. When you’re standing on that cold, stony summit, the name "Bald Mountain" feels much more appropriate than the slightly smoother "Scafell."

The God’s Head: Roseberry Topping

Over in Yorkshire, we have a case of a Viking god being lost to phonetics. Roseberry Topping is one of the most recognizable hills in the North York Moors, looking a bit like a miniature Matterhorn.

Originally, it was called Othenesberg, which means "Odin’s Hill." The Viking settlers dedicated the peak to their chief deity, a sign of just how much they respected its distinct shape. But over centuries of the local dialect "chewing" the name, Othenesberg morphed into "Roseberry." The word "Topping" was added later—a local term for a hill or summit—effectively hiding the Norse god under a layer of Yorkshire fruitiness. It’s a long way from the All-Father to a berry, but that’s the power of a thousand years of mispronunciation.

The Architectural Viking: Great Gable

Then we have Great Gable. This is a classic example of the literal-mindedness of the Norse settlers. They didn't see mystical spirits or gods here; they saw a construction project.

The name comes from the Old Norse Gafl. When you view the mountain from Wasdale, the profile is unmistakable—it looks exactly like the gabled end of a house. It is one of the most honest, "does what it says on the tin" names in the Lake District. The Vikings arrived, saw a massive rock that looked like a roofline, and named it accordingly. It’s a blunt, functional way of looking at the world that has survived perfectly intact.

Anatomy and Instinct: Sticks, Snouts, and Paps

The people who lived on this land a thousand years ago were incredibly literal. They didn't see the mountains as scenic vistas; they saw them as obstacles, resources, or landmarks. This is why so many names are based on basic anatomy.

If you see "Stickle" on the map—Pike of Stickle, Harrison Stickle—you can bet the path is about to get vertical. It’s from the Norse Stikill, meaning a sharp point. It’s less of a name and more of a warning. Then you have the "Snouts," like Cauldron Snout or Lingmell Snout. It’s the Norse snagi, describing a piece of land that projects out like a nose.

In the Southern Uplands and over on the Paps of Jura, the naming gets even more visceral. "Pap" is an ancient word for a breast. The early settlers looked at these perfectly rounded, conical hills and saw a familiar, human shape. It’s a blunt, earthy way of mapping the world that has survived for centuries because, frankly, it’s a very accurate description of the silhouette.

The Shivering Mother: Mam Tor

Down in the Peak District, we have Mam Tor, which fits this anatomical theme perfectly. The name translates from Old English as "Mother Hill." It’s a beautiful bit of instinctual naming.

It earned this title because of the frequent landslips on its eastern face, which have created a "litter" of smaller hillocks at its base. To the ancient locals, it looked exactly like a mother mountain surrounded by her offspring. There’s something quite touching about that—viewing a geological process as a family dynamic. Even today, as the "Shivering Mountain" continues to slowly slide away, it’s still defined by its relationship to those smaller hills at its feet.

The "Cockups" and the Grocery List

We can’t really ignore Great Cockup and Little Cockup, even if they do make every hiker over the age of twelve stop for a photo. Despite how it sounds now, the origin is much more about what was for dinner than anything else. It comes from the Old English Cocc-hop, which means a "valley of the woodcock." While it was a grocery list for the hunters, modern hikers have turned it into a bit of a bucket list for Instagram—proving that our collective sense of humor hasn't really matured in a thousand years; we've just traded the arrows for smartphones.

The Cornish Swallow: Brown Willy

Even down in Cornwall, the highest point on Bodmin Moor has a name that sounds like a schoolboy joke. Brown Willy is actually a classic bit of mistranslation from the Cornish Bron Wennili, which means "Hill of the Swallows." Over time, the local language was flattened out until it sounded like something English, and we ended up with a name that sounds more like a clinical diagnosis than a mountain. We traded the "original grace" of the swallows for a bit of a schoolboy snicker.

The Redundancy Loop: Hill-Hill-Hill Hill

One of the most fascinating things about the map is how often we accidentally name the same thing two or three times over. It’s what happens when one culture moves in, asks "What’s that called?", hears the local word for "hill," and then adds their own word for "hill" on the end.

Take Loughrigg Fell. "Lough" is an old word for a lake, "Rigg" is the Norse for a ridge, and "Fell" is the Norse for a mountain. We’re essentially walking on "Lake-Ridge Hill."

Pendle Hill in Lancashire is another champion: Pen is Cumbric for hill, Hyll is Old English for hill, and then we added "Hill" for good measure. When you stand on the top of Pendle Hill, you are literally standing on "Hill-Hill Hill." It’s a linguistic pile-up that tells the whole history of the British Isles in three short syllables.

But if Pendle Hill is a linguistic pile-up, Torpenhow Hill in Cumbria is a four-car collision. Tor, Pen, and How all mean "hill" in different languages. When we added "Hill" to the end, we created "Hill-Hill-Hill Hill." It is what happens when nobody in the valley has spoken to each other for two thousand years.

Why the weirdness matters

You’d think that in the age of GPS and satellite mapping, we would have standardized all of this. But the fact that we haven't is what makes walking here so fascinating. These names are the texture of the hills. They are the moments where the official record didn't quite manage to smooth over the local reality.

The map isn't just a list of locations; it’s a record of lost languages and half-forgotten descriptions. When we walk these hills, we aren't just moving through space; we’re moving through time. These names are the points where that history pokes through the surface, reminding us that the fells have been lived in, worked on, and laughed at for thousands of years.

The fells are telling you a story; you just have to know how to listen to the weird bits.
