What is the difference between a beck and a burn?

Both usually mean a stream. Beck is common in northern England and comes from Old Norse bekkr; burn is common in Scotland and parts of northern England. Neither word fixes the stream’s size, gradient or safety.

Why is Bassenthwaite called the Lake District’s only lake?

It is the only body of water in the National Park whose established name includes the word Lake: Bassenthwaite Lake. Windermere, Wastwater and the others are still lakes in ordinary geographical use; their traditional names simply end differently.

Should I be worried if I see Moss or Flow on my walking map?

Treat those names as clues to peatland or wet ground, then check the map, route information, recent weather and conditions. The ground may be boggy or difficult, but the name alone does not prove that every part is liquid or impassable.
