There’s a specific kind of frustration that hits when you realize the "High Pike" you’ve just spent three hours climbing isn't the "High Pike" your friend is currently standing on ten miles away. It feels like a glitch in the system, or like the people who lived here centuries ago simply ran out of words and decided to start again from the beginning of the dictionary. In Scotland, there are three separate mountains called Beinn Dearg that are all Munros—major peaks over 3,000 feet—scattered from Ullapool to Blair Atholl and Braemar. There’s even a fourth one in Torridon that misses the Munro mark by just a few feet. If you get lost on one and tell a rescue team you’re on "The Red Hill," you’ve narrowed your location down to about a third of the country.

This isn't a case of our ancestors being particularly uncreative, though it certainly looks that way on a modern map. It’s actually the result of a massive, slightly panicked collision between two very different worlds: the hyper-local life of a 1700s shepherd and the military-grade bureaucracy of the Victorian mapmakers. To understand why we have so many identical names, you have to stop thinking of a mountain name as a "brand" and start thinking of it as a post-it note left by someone who never expected anyone else to read it.

The Five-Mile World: Why Proximity Defined Every Name

The big thing to realize is that for most of history, people lived and died within about a five-mile radius of their front door. If you were a farmer in the Lake District in the 18th century, your entire reality was your specific valley. You were "hefted" to that land just as much as your sheep were. You knew every rock and every stream because they were part of your workplace, but the concept of "the next valley over" was almost as abstract as a different country. You didn't go there, and you certainly didn't talk to the people who did.

In this world, a name like "High Pike" wasn't really a name at all. It was just a description. You called the high, pointy bit of rock above your farm "The High Pike" because it was the only high, pointy bit of rock you could see. It was a perfect, functional label for your family and your neighbors. The fact that a farmer fifteen miles away in a different valley was also looking at a pointy bit of rock and calling it "High Pike" was completely irrelevant. You were never going to meet him, and you were never going to share a map, because maps didn't exist for people like you.

This is the core of the problem. We see the duplication today because we have the technology to look at the whole country at once. We see two "High Pikes" on the same screen and think it's a mistake. But back then, those two names existed in parallel universes. The names weren't "invented" to be unique; they were invented to be useful within walking distance of a specific pub. It’s the geographic equivalent of every family in ten different isolated villages naming their dog "Dog." It works perfectly well until you bring all those families to the same park at the same time. The Ordnance Survey map was that park.

The Military Mapmakers

The real "invention" of these names as permanent, fixed labels happened when the Ordnance Survey (OS) started crawling over the UK in the 18th and 19th centuries. This wasn't a project started for hikers or weekend tourists. It was a military operation. After the Jacobite risings in Scotland, the British government realized they couldn't move cannons or troops through the Highlands because they had no idea where anything was. They needed landmarks, and they needed them fast.

The surveyors were mostly military men—English-speaking officers who were sent out to map a country that was, to them, incredibly alien. They were often working under massive deadlines and living in pretty miserable conditions. Imagine being an OS surveyor in 1840. You’re cold, you’re tired, and you’re trying to use a heavy brass theodolite in a Scottish gale. You don't have time for a linguistic deep-dive. You walk into a glen, point at a massive hunk of rock, and ask the nearest local, "What do you call that?"

The local gives you the descriptive label they’ve used their whole life: "That’s the High Pike." The surveyor writes it down, moves to the next square on his grid, and does the same thing. He wasn't looking for synonyms or checking for duplicates in a central database. If three different people in three different valleys gave him the same description for three different hills, he just wrote it down three times. He was mapping terrain, not naming pets. These guys essentially "trapped" a thousand years of local shorthand and froze it into a national record, turning casual descriptions into permanent, official titles.

Scotland’s Color-by-Numbers

Scotland is where this duplication gets really extreme, mostly because of how literal-minded the hunters and travelers who lived there actually were. Take the name Beinn Dearg. In Gaelic, it just means "Red Hill," and because red rock is all over the Highlands, the map is absolutely crawling with them. You have four of them that are significant enough to be famous: three are official Munros (found in Ullapool, Blair Atholl, and Braemar) and the fourth is a Corbett in Torridon. To a local, their "Red Hill" was the only one that mattered, but to a modern map, it’s a naming disaster.

Then there’s Ben More. Again, the name isn't fancy—Beinn Mhòr just means "Big Hill"—so it was used whenever someone looked at the highest point in their glen. You’ve got three major Munros sharing that exact name: one on the Isle of Mull, one in Crianlarich, and one in Assynt. If you’re standing in one of those places, yours is undeniably the big hill, and the idea of checking if someone else had already used the name a hundred miles away would have seemed like a total waste of breath.

The reason there are so many of these is down to the geology. Certain types of Torridonian sandstone and granite turn a very distinct, rusty red color when they get wet or when the sun hits them at a low angle. If you were a traveler five hundred years ago, "The Red Hill" was an incredibly useful navigation point you could see from miles away. There was no central registry to tell the people in Torridon that "Red Hill" was already taken by the people in Atholl. They were both looking at red rocks, so they both used the same label.

The Job Description Hills

In the Yorkshire Dales, the duplication of a name like Whernside takes us on a slightly different journey—one based on industry rather than just how the hill looked. You have Whernside (the highest of the Three Peaks) and

near Kettlewell. They aren't the same mountain, and they aren't even particularly close to one another, but they share a "job description."

The name comes from "quern," which was the stone used for hand-grinding grain into flour. These hills were essentially the medieval equivalent of a hardware store. They were the specific places where you could find gritstone of a high enough quality to be carved into millstones. If a hill had a seam of this rock, it became a "Quern-side."

Because every community in the Dales needed bread to survive, every community needed a source of quern stones. While there’s a "Little Whernside" that sits as a shoulder of the bigger one, the two prominent peaks standing apart were named for the utility they provided to their respective valleys. To the locals, it didn't matter that the names were the same; what mattered was that they both told you where to go if your flour mill broke down. The OS surveyors just recorded this industrial label and turned it into a proper noun, leaving us with a map where two different mountains are named after a piece of kitchen equipment.

The Raven Crag Pandemic

If you think the two "High Pikes" are a nuisance, they have nothing on the Lake District's absolute obsession with Raven Crag. There are seven of them. Not seven different crags on one mountain, but seven entirely distinct hills or massive outcrops, all sharing the exact same name. You’ll find them in Thirlmere, Kentmere, Borrowdale, Patterdale, Coniston, Mungrisdale, and Martindale.

It tells you everything you need to know about the lack of interest in "unique branding" back in the day. A raven is a big, obvious bird that likes to nest on steep, obvious cliffs. If you were a local farmer and you saw ravens nesting on the crag above your barn, calling it "Raven Crag" wasn't a creative choice—it was just a statement of fact. It’s the geographic equivalent of naming a shop "The Shop." It works perfectly well until six other people in six other villages do the exact same thing, and suddenly a 19th-century mapmaker has to figure out how to tell them apart.

And it doesn't stop with ravens. The Lakes are cluttered with these "greatest hits" names. You’ve got Black Crag appearing four times (Brathay, Troutbeck, Witherslack, and Cartmel), usually because the rock looked dark or was covered in wet moss. You’ve got four Castle Crags (Borrowdale, Shoulthwaite, Haweswater, and Mardale) because they happen to look a bit like a fortification. Then there are three Rough Crags and three Harter Fells. It’s a highlights reel of the same five ideas repeated until the map looks like it’s stuttering.

Southern Echoes in Dartmoor

This isn't just a northern habit, either. Down in Devon, Dartmoor has its own version of geographic Groundhog Day, mostly centered around the "Tor" naming system. Dartmoor is a playground for duplication because the granite stacks all tend to look quite similar from a distance.

Take Sharp Tor. There are four major ones recognized as distinct hills, found across Dartmeet, Lydford, the Teign Valley, and Tavy Cleave. The logic is painfully simple: if it’s a tor and it’s a bit pointy, it’s a Sharp Tor. If it’s dark, it’s a Black Tor (of which there are three, at High Willhays, Shipley Bridge, and Walkhampton Common). If it looks like a dog, it’s a Hound Tor (you’ll find two of those, in Manaton and Belstone).

Again, if you’re a farmer on Walkhampton Common, your "Black Tor" is the only one that exists in your world. You don't care that someone over at High Willhays has their own "Black Tor" because you’re never going to go there to check. Why would you? You’ve got enough work to do without worrying about the copyright status of a pile of rocks ten miles away.

The Welsh Spare Peaks

Wales handles its duplication with a sense of literalism that almost makes you respect the lack of effort. In Snowdonia (Eryri), you’ll find Mynydd Mawr appearing twice—once near the main Snowdon massif and again on the Llyn Peninsula. In Welsh, Mynydd Mawr literally means "Big Mountain." It’s hard to get more descriptive than that. If it’s big and it’s a mountain, that’s the name it gets.

You’ve also got Moel Eilio appearing in both Llanberis and Beddgelert, and Moel Goch (Red Hill) popping up in both the Moel Hebog range and the Clwydian Range. But the real master of identity theft is Y Gribin. This is a famous, rocky ridge that exists as a major feature in both the Snowdon range and the Glyderau.

It’s like the people who named these peaks were so busy working the land that they couldn't be bothered with the concept of "uniqueness." If a ridge was rocky and narrow, then that was the name. It wasn't a title; it was a description of the terrain. The confusion only started once we started treating these mountains as a weekend hobby rather than a place to graze sheep.

Trapped by the Map: How the Ordnance Survey Made Mistakes Permanent

The real reason these duplicates haven't been "fixed" is that once the OS maps were printed, they became the ultimate authority. Even if a local community eventually realized their High Pike wasn't unique, they couldn't change it. The map was what the government used, what the military used, and eventually, what the tourists used.

The Victorian era solidified this even further. When people started climbing hills for fun, they relied on these maps. They didn't have the local context to know that "The Pike" was just a generic term for a pointy bit of rock. They treated the map like gospel. If the map said High Pike, then that was its name, and they would defend it with the same vigor they applied to their own family names.

The surveyors also had a habit of "cleaning up" the language. If a local gave them a complex, unique name in a thick dialect, the surveyor might just simplify it to the nearest English word they understood. This meant that any unique local flavor was often bleached out, replaced by a handful of recognizable words like Pike, Crag, or Fell. Ironically, the mapmakers’ attempt to make the land easier to understand actually made it more confusing by increasing the number of identical names.

The Living History of Our Hills

Ultimately, the reason we have so many hills called the same thing is that we are looking at a map built out of a thousand different people's "Back Yards." Each of those people was the center of their own universe, and in their universe, there was only one "Black Hill" or one "Big Peak."

We haven't changed the names because, despite the confusion, they are honest. They tell the story of a time when the world was much bigger and much slower. Every time a hiker gets confused between two Whernsides, they are experiencing a tiny remnant of a history where you never needed to look beyond your own horizon. We have a landscape full of repeat names because for most of our history, the idea that someone from another part of the country would even be on your hill was a completely alien concept. The identical names aren't a mistake; they are a monument to a time when your own valley was the only world that mattered.
