Yes, there's a full circuit of roughly 7.5 miles that takes about three to four hours. The northern shore involves some scrambling over rocks and can be tricky after rain, whilst the southern shore follows a more civilised forest track.

It reaches about 45 metres at its deepest point and is 2.5 miles long. That makes it deep enough to be impressive but not the deepest Lake District water—that's Wastwater at 79 metres.

What is the Wild Ennerdale project?

It's a rewilding collaboration since 2003 between the Forestry Commission, National Trust, and United Utilities that basically lets nature do its thing. Old conifer plantations are being diversified, rivers allowed to meander naturally, and fallen trees left where they fall.
