Walking in the UK hills often means dealing with low cloud and poor visibility. When the mist rolls in, your surroundings can quickly shrink to just a few metres, making it hard to stay oriented. In these conditions, safe navigation becomes a matter of focus—relying on a compass or GPS to stay on the path and well away from steep edges. It is often a slow, damp process that requires constant attention.

But these same conditions can also lead to something much more interesting. If you manage to climb high enough to get above the cloud layer, the mist stops being a navigation hazard and becomes the setting for some unusual and quite frankly, amazing optical effects. Because when the sun hits the top of the cloud from a low angle, it creates a visual phenomenon that is as much about perspective as it is about physics. The Brocken Spectre.

The moment you break through the "cloud sea" into the clear air above, the physics of the mountain changes. With the sun low and positioned directly behind you, your shadow is no longer cast onto the rock or grass at your feet. Instead, it is projected forward, deep into the bank of mist in front of you.

This is the Brocken Spectre. Because the mist lacks any familiar landmarks like trees or buildings to provide a sense of scale, your brain is momentarily fooled. It cannot judge the distance of the shadow, so it interprets your silhouette as a massive, three-dimensional figure standing in the middle of the sky. Because the shadow is projected through multiple layers of water droplets, it gains a sense of volume and depth that a flat shadow simply doesn't have. It is a disorienting sight, but there is a simple "local trick" to confirm your eyes aren't playing tricks: raise a walking pole. The giant in the mist will mimic the movement instantly, confirming that the "ghost" is merely your own reflection stretched by the light.

This usually happens during high-pressure weather in the winter. As the ground cools down at night, it chills the air sitting right above it. Because cold air is heavier than warm air, it acts like water, flowing downhill and pooling in the deep glacial bowls and valley floors. This creates a thick blanket of fog while the summits stay warm and perfectly clear. The clarity of the ghost you see depends on the mist being just right. To see a spectre, you need a very specific geography: a steep drop-off directly in front of you that allows the sun behind you to project your shadow onto a deep screen of mist in the void below.

The Lake District provides some of the most reliable settings, particularly the ridges around Helvellyn. Striding Edge and Swirral Edge are famous for this because their narrow, rocky crests allow you to stand with the sun at your back while looking directly down into the mist-filled coves of Red Tarn. In North Wales, the steep eastern faces of the Snowdon range offer similar opportunities. Capturing a Glory on camera is notoriously difficult because of the extreme contrast.

Underexpose: Set your Exposure Compensation to -1.0 or -2.0. This prevents the bright mist from "blowing out" the delicate colors of the rainbow rings.
Focus Manually: Cameras struggle to lock onto mist. Focus on your walking pole at arm's length, lock the focus, and then frame the shadow.
The Bullseye: Aim your lens precisely at the head of your shadow (the anti-solar point) to ensure the rings are perfectly centered in your frame.

Tips for Spotting a Brocken Spectre on the Summit

We live in an age where mountain apps can predict rainfall to the minute, but they are useless at predicting the "spirit" of the hill. No algorithm can tell you exactly when the sun will hit the gully at the correct angle to project your shadow into the void.

These moments are fleeting; they last only as long as the wind remains calm and the sun stays low (usually shortly after sunrise or just before sunset). They serve as a reminder that the best parts of being on the hill are often the things the data didn't catch. If you see the mist starting to glow, stop. Put the hiking schedule aside, stay still, and watch. The best conditions on the mountain aren't found on a screen—they are found when you trust your own eyes enough to look for the light in the grey.
