Alpenglow and Fata Morgana: UK Mountain Optical Illusions

Most of the time, the light on a UK hill is predictable. It is either the flat, featureless grey of a low-hanging cloud, or the sharp, watery glare of a winter afternoon that makes you squint against wet rock. We don't expect drama on the ridge of Helvellyn or the slopes of Ben Nevis; we are usually too busy watching the bog under our boots.

Yet, occasionally, the combination of damp, layered air and our unique island geography can play some very odd tricks with our vision.

When the atmospheric conditions line up, the hills can warp, project, or scatter light in ways that seem entirely out of place in our otherwise muted landscape. You do not need to be in the Alps to see the horizon bend over a cold sea, or to watch a snow-covered ridge turn a distinct, cold pink after sunset. These aren't supernatural events—they are just the inevitable results of a damp island's air doing what physics demands.

How Alpenglow works

If you have ever stood on a summit in the Cairngorms just as a winter day is ending, you might have seen the snow-covered slopes catch a soft, indirect wash of pink, orange, and deep violet.

We call it alpenglow. The common assumption is that this is simply the last direct rays of the setting sun hitting the high peaks—a standard sunset. But the physics of it are actually quite straightforward. True alpenglow occurs after the sun has already dipped below your horizon on the hill.

When the sun goes down, its direct light can no longer reach the mountain slopes. However, those rays are still firing through the lower, denser parts of the air far to the west. As that light travels through hundreds of miles of damp, cold air, the shorter blue wavelengths are scattered away by moisture and dust. Only the longest, most resilient red wavelengths survive the journey, hitting the upper air directly above the mountains and bouncing back down to illuminate the snow-covered peaks.

Because the light is reflected from the sky rather than coming directly from the sun, the shadows on the mountain are not sharp and black; they are a deep, cold blue. It is a brief window of color that lasts only ten or fifteen minutes before the cold grey of the twilight takes over.

The floating ridges: Fata Morgana

While alpenglow is a trick of light bouncing, our coastlines occasionally play a stranger game with bent light over the water.

If you stand on the high summits of the Lake District, the Mourne Mountains, or the hills of Snowdonia on a clear, calm day, you can often look out across the Irish Sea and see the Isle of Man or the distant Scottish coast. But sometimes, those distant landmasses do not look like flat humps on the water. Instead, they appear as towering, flat-topped blocks, giant squares, or ridges hovering completely detached above the sea.

This is a Fata Morgana—essentially a high-altitude mirage.

In the UK, this usually happens when we have a strong temperature inversion. Normally, the air gets colder the higher you go. But on quiet, stable days, a layer of warm air can slide over a cold surface—like the freezing waters of the Irish Sea or a snow-covered glen near the coast. This warm air traps a thin layer of dense, freezing air beneath it.

When light from a distant island or headland passes through these layers of different temperatures, it doesn't travel in a straight line. The light rays are bent downward, curved by the cold, dense air.

Because your brain assumes light always travels in a straight line, it projects the image of the distant coast back along the path the bent rays entered your eyes. The result is that the island is visually lifted into the sky, stretched vertically, and distorted into blocky, shifting shapes. A low sandbar can suddenly look like a towering cliff face that isn't actually there.

The navigator's warning

These distortions are interesting to look at, but they are a pain if you are trying to navigate a coastal ridge.

The usual way to check your position is by sighting distant landmarks—taking compass bearings on two distant points to pinpoint where you are on the map.

But when one of these mirages is active, it is your eyes that are fooled, not your compass.

Because the temperature inversion layers sit flat, the light is bent vertically rather than horizontally. Your compass bearing to a distant island or headland will actually remain completely accurate because the light is not being deflected to the left or to the right.

The real navigational hazard is visual misidentification and map-to-ground correlation. A low, harmless reef can be stretched upward until it looks like a massive headland, leading you to mistake a familiar peninsula for an entirely different stretch of coast. It also plays havoc with your perception of scale, making a far-off shoreline look as though it is looming right in front of you. Relying on visual identification alone during an inversion is a quick way to misread the terrain; you have to trust the actual numbers on your compass bezel over what you think you see on the horizon.

The ridge shadow

These coastal mirages require miles of clear, open space to bend the light. But you don't need a view of the Irish Sea for the atmosphere to warp your perspective.

Often, the very same temperature inversions that create mirages over the water will trap a dense, cold blanket of fog directly against the high ridges. If you climb high enough to stand right on the upper boundary of that cloud—where the sun is at your back and the damp mist is in your face—you might find your shadow projected directly onto the cloud bank in front of you.

When your shadow is cast over a short distance onto close fog, it can appear massive and distant, occasionally ringed by a colorful halo of refracted light. This is the Brocken Spectre and the Glory. It is a striking sight, but it is ultimately just a wet cloud acting as a screen for your own outline. These tricks do not happen by accident; they require a very specific recipe of weather ingredients, air density, and sun angle. Knowing what to look for can help you identify them before they fade.

The return of the grey

Like most things on our hills, this kind of light doesn't last long.

The pink light on the high snowfields of the Cairngorms cools to a hard, icy grey in a matter of minutes. The floating towers of the Isle of Man seen from the top of Scafell Pike fade back into the haze the moment a slight breeze ruffles the warm air layer over the water, returning the sea to its familiar, flat reality.

There is a clean, simple satisfaction in knowing why this happens. It is a reminder that the hills don't always need to be soaking wet to be interesting. Sometimes, they just require you to stand still in the cold, watch the horizon bend, and appreciate how a damp island works before you head back down the track toward the valley.
