Hiker’s Guide to Clouds

If you spend enough time walking in the UK, you eventually stop looking at your phone and start looking at the sky. This isn't because of some deep spiritual connection with the elements, but because most of us have been caught on a ridge in a downpour that the morning forecast swore wouldn't happen. The British Isles are essentially a massive target for weather systems coming off the Atlantic, and our hills act like speed bumps for that wet air. Learning to read the clouds is often the difference between a great day out and a long, damp walk back to the car in your over-priced Gore-Tex.

The High Altitude Warning System

Think of the high-altitude clouds as the sky’s long-range scouting team. Because they sit more than twenty thousand feet up, they don't have any immediate impact on whether you are getting wet right now. Instead, they are providing a glimpse into the future. They are made entirely of ice crystals, which gives them a sharp, white, and often delicate look. When you see activity this high up, you are looking at the very first ripples of a weather system that might still be hundreds of miles out over the ocean. It is the atmosphere's way of giving you a twenty-four-hour head start to change your plans.

When you look this high up, you are essentially looking for how the moisture is starting to arrive. It usually begins with a few stray, wispy streaks that look like they've been painted on with a dry brush, which we call Cirrus. If those streaks start to merge together into a thin, milky sheet that dims the sun, you've moved into the next stage, known as Cirrostratus.

Cirrus

Cirrus clouds are the ones most people call Mares' Tails. They look like delicate, wispy strands of white silk brushed across the blue. On their own, they are harmless, but they are often the very first sign of an approaching warm front. If you see them starting to thicken and spread, or if the ends of the wisps start to hook upwards, you are looking at a change in air pressure. It usually means the weather will turn within the next twenty-four hours.

Cirrostratus

If that thin wispiness turns into a milky, transparent veil that covers the whole sky, you are looking at Cirrostratus. You can still see the sun through it, but it often creates a halo effect. It looks quite nice, but for a hiker, it is a clear warning. That halo means there is a massive amount of moisture moving in high up. You can usually bank on steady rain arriving in about six to twelve hours.

Mid Level Clouds and the Mackerel Sky

The mid-level clouds are the ones that should grab your attention if you are already out on the hill. Sitting between sixty-five hundred and twenty thousand feet, these are the transition clouds. They aren't just a distant warning anymore; they represent the atmosphere actually thickening and lowering. This is the stage where the "maybe" of the high-altitude wisps turns into the "probably" of the afternoon. When the sky starts to fill at this height, it is a sign that the air mass is changing and the window of fair weather is starting to close.

At this height, the sky tends to take on one of two very different personalities. You will either see a flat, grey mass of Altostratus that slowly eats away at the sunlight, or you will see a broken, rippled pattern of Altocumulus that suggests the air is starting to churn and become a bit more unpredictable.

Altostratus

Altostratus is a grey or bluish sheet that starts to hide the sun. It makes the sun look like a dull, blurred disk, like you are looking at a lightbulb through a frosted bathroom window. When the sun disappears behind this layer entirely, you are in the thickening stage. Persistent rain is usually only a few hours away at this point. If you are halfway through a long day, this is the time to check your map and see where your best escape routes are.

Altocumulus

Then there is Altocumulus, often called a Mackerel Sky because it looks like the scales on a fish. It consists of small white or grey patches or ripples. If you see these on a warm, humid morning, the atmosphere is starting to get restless. If those ripples start to grow little towers or turrets, it means the air is rising rapidly and becoming unstable. It is a classic early warning for an afternoon thunderstorm. If the sky looks like a fish by mid-morning, don't be surprised if the summits are booming by the time you are heading down.

Low Level Reality and the Grey Lid

This is the business end of the sky for a hill walker. The low-level clouds sit below sixty-five hundred feet, which means they are often at the same height as the summits we are trying to climb. This is the layer that actually interacts with the ground. When these clouds arrive, the day stops being about the distant views and starts being about the immediate environment. This is where you lose your sense of scale, where the wind picks up, and where the air turns damp. These clouds are the physical manifestation of the weather hitting the hills.

When you are dealing with this low-level air, you are usually facing one of two problems. The first is a simple loss of visibility caused by a flat layer of Stratus mist. The second is the arrival of a heavy, dark blanket of Nimbostratus, which is the cloud that actually delivers the heavy rain you've been watching for all morning.

Stratus

Stratus is a featureless, flat grey layer. If it is touching the hillside, you are walking in mist. It is a stable cloud, meaning it doesn't usually produce massive storms, but it creates that fine, hanging drizzle that the Scottish call Scotch Mist. It feels like nothing at first, but it will soak you to the skin more effectively than a heavy shower. The main danger here is disorientation. In a world of featureless grey, it is very easy to walk off a corniced edge or take the wrong spur off a summit. This is when you stop guessing and start using your compass.

Stratocumulus and Nimbostratus

Stratocumulus is the most common cloud we see in the UK. It looks like a heavy, dark, honeycomb-patterned lid on the world. It is usually dry, but it is gloomy and keeps the temperature down. You can walk all day in this and stay dry, but you won't be getting any views for your effort. However, if that grey mass darkens and thickens into Nimbostratus, the game changes. This is the true rain cloud. It is thick, dark, and blocks out the sun completely. It brings the kind of steady, heavy rain that sets in for the afternoon and doesn't let up until the front has passed.

Fair Weather and the Big Towers

Even on a day that looks perfect, the sky is never truly still. When the sun hits the mountains, it creates rising currents of warm air, and the clouds that form as a result can be deceptive. These are the vertical clouds. Unlike the layers we’ve talked about so far, these grow upwards. They start out as the highlight of a summer walk, but they can quickly turn into the most dangerous thing you’ll encounter on a ridge. Watching the height of these clouds is far more important than watching their width.

What you are looking for here is a change in the cloud's personality. It starts as a harmless, fluffy Cumulus cloud, but if you notice it beginning to stretch upwards like a tower, it is well on its way to becoming a Cumulonimbus, which is a cloud you definitely don't want to be under.

Cumulus and Cumulonimbus

On a good day, you will see Cumulus. These are the classic white cotton balls with flat bases. They are caused by the sun warming the ground, which in turn warms the air and makes it rise. As long as these clouds stay wider than they are tall, you are having a brilliant day on the hills. They are fair-weather clouds and usually mean the atmosphere is stable.

The problem starts when those cotton balls start growing vertically. If a Cumulus cloud starts to look like a giant head of cauliflower, it is becoming unstable. When it develops a dark base and a flat, anvil-shaped top, it has become a Cumulonimbus. This is a storm cloud, and it is a massive engine of energy. It produces heavy downpours, hail, and lightning. If you see an anvil-shaped cloud heading your way while you are on an exposed ridge or a high plateau, you need to get down. Lightning prefers high points, and on a mountain, you are the highest point around.

Local Tricks and Mountain Caps

The most frustrating thing about mountain weather is that the hills often create their own microclimates. You can check a general forecast for a region, but the specific peak you are standing on might be doing something completely different. These clouds are caused by the topography itself—the way the wind is forced up and over the rock. They are the local "tricks" of the UK fells, and they can make a mockery of a clear blue sky just a few miles away in the valley.

There are three main tricks the mountains like to play. First is the Lenticular cloud, which acts as a warning for high winds. Then there is the Orographic Cap, which is the stubborn "hat" that won't leave a summit. Finally, there is the Temperature Inversion, which is the rare occasion where the mountain actually rewards you for climbing.

Lenticular Clouds

One is the Lenticular cloud, which looks like a smooth UFO or a stack of pancakes hovering over a summit. They look stationary and peaceful, but they are actually formed by air being forced over the peak at high speeds. If you see a pancake sitting over Ben Nevis or Scafell Pike, it means the wind at the top is screaming. It might be calm in the valley, but you can expect to be blown off your feet once you reach the top.

Orographic Cap Cloud

You also have the orographic cap cloud. This is when a single mountain has a cloud sitting on its head like a hat, while every other peak is clear. This happens because the air is just moist enough to condense when it hits that specific height. Don't fall into the trap of thinking it will burn off. A cap cloud can stay there for eight hours, keeping you in a cold, wet, zero-visibility bubble while the rest of the country is enjoying a heatwave.

Temperature Inversion

Finally, there is the temperature inversion. This is the one every hiker hopes for. It happens when cold air gets trapped in the valleys under a layer of warm air, creating a carpet of cloud below you while the summits are in the sun. It is a spectacular sight, but remember that you eventually have to go back down into it. When you descend into an inversion, your visibility will go from fifty miles to five yards in the space of a few steps. Make sure you have your descent bearing sorted before you leave the sunshine.

The Real-Time Forecast

Reading the sky is a bit of an art, but it is mostly about watching for transitions. If the clouds are getting lower, thicker, and darker, the weather is getting worse. If they are rising and breaking up, things are improving. It is more about the direction of travel than any single snapshot. If the sky looks like a bruised plum and the wind is picking up, it doesn't matter what the forecast said at breakfast; it is time to put your coat on.
