It began as three natural tarns. In 1865 James Garth Marshall dammed an outflow, joined them into a larger body of water and planted hundreds of trees, creating the designed landscape seen today.

The National Trust circular trail is 2 miles (3.2km) and takes about one hour. The main firm-gravel route is accessible for wheelchairs and mobility vehicles, but it includes climbs, descents and some short steeper sections.

Can you reach Tarn Hows without a car?

Yes. The 505 bus between Hawkshead and Coniston stops at Hawkshead Hill Chapel, about one mile away; check the current timetable. Walking approaches from Hawkshead or Coniston are about 2.25 miles each way.
