Why are some sheepfolds circular and others rectangular?

There is no single national rule. Shape may reflect terrain, existing walls, nearby water, available stone, local tradition, the fold's purpose and later rebuilding. The plan must be interpreted with its location and other features.

What were traditional sheepfolds used for?

They were used to gather and control sheep for tasks such as sorting, separating ewes and lambs, marking, shearing, washing or dipping. Some upland folds also offered shelter, while multi-cellular folds provided separate working pens.

Can walkers rely on an old sheepfold for shelter?

No. A sound wall may reduce wind in an emergency, but ruined folds can contain loose or collapsing stone and may still be used for livestock. Carry proper emergency equipment, do not climb or move stones, and avoid disturbing animals.
