Well-built dry stone walls can survive for hundreds of years with regular maintenance. That said, they need attention in the first few years as they settle, and survival depends on construction quality, ground conditions, livestock pressure, and how conscientiously they're looked after.

Why were dry stone walls so expensive to build?

Labour was the main cost — you were essentially buying hundreds of hours of skilled work. The expense increased with wall height, difficult terrain, the type of stone available, and whether stone had to be quarried and hauled rather than gathered from the field.
