The initials identify the adjoining parishes or estates that the stone divides. They're not ancient symbols—they're basically administrative labels showing which jurisdiction is on each side of the boundary.

Why were parish boundary stones placed on moorland?

Because moorland has no natural features like hedges or walls to mark where one parish ends and another begins. The stones settled disputes over grazing rights, tithes, and ownership of livestock by creating permanent physical markers everyone could see.

Can you still find parish boundary stones today?

Yes, many are still exactly where they were placed two or three centuries ago across moorland in the Pennines, Lake District, and North York Moors. Some are marked on OS maps, but many aren't—you usually stumble across them by accident while walking.
