Why did corpse roads and coffin paths exist?

Some outlying communities had to carry their dead to a distant parish church or burial ground because a nearer chapel or church had no place for burial. The reason, date and route varied locally, so not every coffin path is medieval or identical in origin.

Does an old corpse road automatically remain a public right of way?

No. The passage of a corpse did not automatically create a public right of way. Follow the route's current legal status: check the definitive map and local information, and use only public rights of way, open-access land or permitted paths.

Are corpse roads easy, well-maintained walking routes?

There is no guarantee. A historic line may be rough, boggy, faint, diverted or split between different types of access. Check a current map, weather and land-manager advice, carry suitable equipment, and never remove gates or walls.
