Linguistic Descriptions: A name like Blencathra (868 m / 2,848 ft) is Cumbric. Blene means "top" or "summit," and cathra likely means "chair." Similarly, names including "Scar" come from the Norse skjær, meaning a cliff or outcrop of rock, signaling a physical obstacle you'll have to navigate.
Conservation and "Path Braiding": Because the Birketts involve visiting obscure spots, there’s a real issue with "path braiding." 3. The Low-Level Birketts

You don't have to be at 3,000 feet to be on a Birkett. Black Fell (323 m / 1,060 ft) near Skelwith Bridge is a classic example. It sits below the radar of the big peak lists but offers a stunning, intimate view of the fells. It’s a "significant" hill despite its height and demonstrates exactly what Bill Birkett was trying to capture. Not only that but its the easiest one to access so its win win!

Highs, Difficulties, and Warnings

The technical one: Pillar Rock

Pillar Rock (770 m / 2,526 ft) is the big one. It is the only hill on the list that you cannot simply walk up. You have to scramble or climb. Even the "easy" routes like the "Slab and Notch" are extremely exposed. If you aren't a climber, you either need a guide or you need to accept that this might be the one you don't do. This one is the reason that not many people ever complete the Birketts.

The dangerous one: Broad Stand

If you are moving between Scafell and Scafell Pike, you'll see a series of rock steps called Broad Stand. It looks like a shortcut. It isn't. It’s a slab of rock that is often wet and slippery. Many people have died or been seriously injured here. For the Birketts, it's better to go the long way around via Foxes Tarn.

The "Empty Quarter": Wet Sleddale & Shap Fells

Wet Sleddale and the Shap Fells are a vast, desolate area of high moorland with no roads and very few paths. It’s home to Birketts like Selside Pike (655 m / 2,149 ft) and Branstree NE Top (approx 640 m / 2,100 ft). If the weather turns, this place becomes a trap. It’s easy to get disoriented because the landscape is so featureless and one rolling ridge looks exactly like the next. Always have a backup plan for navigation here.
