There are higher mountains in the world, but few carry the weight of Scafell Pike. Standing at 978m (3,209ft), it is the highest point in England — the summit that every serious fell walker eventually turns their face toward. The route described here takes the classic approach via the Corridor Route, a high-level traverse that gives you the mountain's full drama without resorting to the busy, eroded path from Wasdale Head.

The Approach — Borrowdale to Sty Head

From the small car park at Seathwaite Farm, the path climbs immediately through a gate and follows the River Derwent upstream. The valley narrows and steepens as you approach Stockley Bridge, a handsome packhorse bridge that marks the end of the easy walking. Beyond the bridge, zigzag steeply up the rough path to the broad col of Sty Head (455m).

The Corridor Route

From Sty Head, resist the temptation to climb directly up the scree — instead, take the path that traverses west and north below the crags. This is the Corridor Route, a high-level shelf that winds between the great rock buttresses of Great End and Scafell Pike itself. The path passes below Piers Gill — a dramatic ravine. Stay on the established path at all times.

The Summit Plateau

The summit of Scafell Pike is unmistakable: a large cairn surrounded by a moonscape of shattered grey-brown boulders. On a clear day, the panorama extends to the Isle of Man, the Scottish hills, Snowdonia, and across the whole of the Lake District. In cloud, however, the plateau is featureless — take a compass bearing from the cairn before descending.

Descent — via Lingmell Col

Descend northeast to Lingmell Col, then drop steeply down and pick up the path back to Sty Head. From Sty Head, reverse the ascent route back to Seathwaite. The descent is rougher than the ascent — take it steady on the loose rock.

Navigation Notes

In mist, the summit plateau is genuinely disorientating — carry a compass
The Corridor Route path is clear in good visibility but hard to follow in snow
Avoid Piers Gill at all costs — it looks tempting as a short cut and it is not
The Seathwaite approach is far quieter than the Wasdale Head route

Getting There

Seathwaite is reached via the B5289 through Borrowdale from Keswick. The farm car park is pay-and-display. The Borrowdale Rambler bus (service 78) runs seasonally from Keswick to Seatoller, leaving a 1km walk up the lane to Seathwaite.
