Striding Edge is the most famous ridge in the Lake District — possibly in England. A narrow, exhilarating arête of rock that connects the eastern fells to the summit of Helvellyn, it has been described, photographed, and feared for centuries. Wordsworth wrote about it. Wainwright mapped it obsessively. And every year, thousands of walkers nervously pick their way along its rocky spine for the first time.

The route described here is the classic circuit: up via Striding Edge, over Helvellyn's broad summit plateau, and down via the slightly gentler but still dramatic Swirral Edge. It is a full mountain day that deserves full mountain preparation.

Glenridding to Striding Edge

From Glenridding's main car park, take the path north past the Traveller's Rest pub and follow Mires Beck up through the bracken. The path climbs steadily past the old lead mine workings and emerges onto the open fell at about 400m. Follow the ridge northeast, gaining height steadily. As you approach the High Spying How cairn, the full length of Striding Edge comes into view for the first time.

Striding Edge — The Ridge

The edge can be walked either on the crest (more exciting, requires hands in places) or on a path on the south side that avoids the most exposed sections. In good conditions, most walkers take a mixture of both. The rock is solid and grippy, but in wet conditions the slabs become slippery. About two thirds of the way along, you reach the Stony Cove section — a short but steep scramble that is the crux of the route.

The Summit

Helvellyn's summit plateau is a broad, flat expanse — quite unexpected after the drama of the edge. The summit cairn, trig point, and wind shelter sit at 950m. On a clear day the view takes in almost the entire Lake District, with the Pennines to the east.

Descent via Swirral Edge

From the summit, head north along the plateau and then descend the northwest ridge to Swirral Edge. This is shorter than Striding Edge but no less dramatic. Take the path that drops left (west) before Catstycam and descend directly to the valley via Red Tarn Beck, returning to Glenridding.

Conditions & Difficulty

Striding Edge in winter requires ice axe and crampons
In high winds, the exposed crest becomes genuinely dangerous

Red Tarn can freeze solid in winter
