When is breeding season for ground-nesting birds in the UK?

The main breeding season runs from March to August, though exact timings vary by species. Some moorland birds start nesting as early as April, while beach nesters like little terns are most active during summer months.

How can I tell if I'm disturbing a bird's nest while walking?

Parent birds will often alarm call loudly, swoop low over your head, or fly back and forth. Some species like lapwings and ringed plovers will even fake an injury by dragging a wing along the ground to lure you away from their nest.

Why do ground-nesting birds need protection from walkers and dogs?

Their nests are so well-camouflaged that you can easily step on eggs or chicks without seeing them. Even friendly dogs appear as predators to these birds, causing parents to abandon nests and leaving eggs to cool or chicks vulnerable to cold and starvation.
