About this Route
This GPX follows the Black Road from the southern side of the Galtees to Galtymore, returning the same way. It covers 10.4 km with about 584 m of ascent and usually takes 3½ to 5 hours. The approach is one of the clearest ways onto the mountain, but the upper slopes are open, wet and difficult to navigate when cloud comes down.
From the Black Road parking area near Skeheenarinky, follow the old track north towards the mountains. It rises gently at first through farmland and open hillside before becoming rougher near the head of the track. Continue across wetter ground towards the col between Galtybeg and Galtymore. This GPX then makes the final climb to Galtymore's broad summit at 918 m, where a large white Celtic cross and trig point stand close to the Limerick–Tipperary boundary. The northern side falls sharply into corries, so keep well back from the edge in poor visibility.
Return by the same southern route and Black Road. Do not follow ridge paths continuing west or drop towards the corrie lakes. The built track can give a false sense of security on the approach; above it, mist and wind can arrive quickly, and peat or snow may hide paths. Carry proper waterproofs, a map and compass, and leave the summit on a checked bearing.

Route Waypoints
Start at the small trail parking area reached from the R639 near Skeheenarinky. Park tightly and leave gates and local access clear.
Follow the old track north through the lower hillside. Keep to the public route where farm tracks branch away.
Continue beyond enclosed land as the track becomes rougher. The summit is not yet visible from every part of the approach.
The Black Road fades into wetter mountain ground. Take a bearing now, before cloud or darkness makes the line less obvious.
Climb steadily on grass and peat towards the main ridge. Avoid eroded channels and waterlogged shortcuts.
Gain broader high ground and continue towards the summit cross. Keep away from the steep northern corrie edge.
Reach the Celtic cross and trig point at 918 m. The summit is exposed and can be busy in settled weather.
Retrace the southern slope to the old track and follow it back to the parking area. Do not descend into the northern corries.
Essential Tips
The Black Road ends before the summit. A map and compass are essential when the upper mountain is in cloud.
Galtymore's northern side is steep and broken above corrie lakes. Give it plenty of room in wind, mist or snow.
The ground above the old road holds water. Waterproof boots and gaiters are useful after rain.
The start lies among narrow rural roads and working farms. Never block gates, passing places or residents' access.
