About this Route
This out-and-back from Kinloch covers 10.7 km and climbs about 970 m, taking in Hallival before reaching Askival, the highest point on Rum. The first part follows the familiar path towards Coire Dubh, but the character changes quickly once you leave the lower ground. Hallival's rocky ridge is steep and exposed, with hands needed in several places.
From Hallival's summit the route drops over slabs and loose ground to the col between Hallival and Askival. That descent needs patience, particularly when the rock is wet. The line then keeps to the east side of Askival's ridge, avoiding the main Askival Pinnacle, before climbing over rough rock to the 812 m summit. This is still serious mountain terrain: avoiding the pinnacle does not turn the route into an ordinary hill path. The return reverses the whole route, including the climb back over Hallival, so it is worth keeping plenty of time and energy in reserve.
Rum's weather can close in very quickly and the ridge is a poor place to discover that the ferry timetable is tight. Check sailings before setting off, carry a proper map and compass as well as the GPX, and be prepared to turn around if the rock is wet or the wind is making the exposed sections uncomfortable. On the lower slopes, take care around Manx shearwater burrows and stick to durable ground wherever you can.

Start at Kinloch and follow the signed path inland towards Coire Dubh. Check the return sailing before leaving, as there is very little room for delay at the end of the day.
Leave the easier ground around Kinloch and continue south-west on the rougher hill path. The glen can be wet underfoot, and care is needed around nesting burrows.
The path steepens beneath Hallival. Keep to the established line as far as it remains clear, then pick the safest way through the broken rock rather than forcing a direct climb.
Climb the rocky ridge towards Hallival. Several steps need hands and there is genuine exposure; wet rock or a strong crosswind can make this section unsafe.
Reach Hallival's 723 m summit and take a moment to identify the descent to the south. The way to Askival drops steeply over slabs and scree to the obvious col.
Descend carefully to the col at roughly 600 m. Loose stones sit between slabs here, so keep the group close enough to avoid dislodging rocks onto one another.
Follow the line on the east side of the ridge, which avoids the main Askival Pinnacle, then climb rough rock to the 812 m summit. Do not continue towards Trallval or Ainshval.
Reverse the route over Hallival and descend through Coire Dubh. The re-ascent from the col is easily underestimated, so allow generous time for the return to the pier.
Essential Tips
There is exposed, hands-on ground on Hallival and rough rock on Askival. If you are not comfortable reversing steep scrambles, choose a less serious Rum walk.
Askival is only the halfway point. You still have to regain Hallival and descend its rocky north ridge before the easier walk back to Kinloch.
Check the day's sailing times and any disruption before leaving Kinloch. Carry enough food, water and clothing in case the outing takes longer than expected.
Manx shearwaters nest in burrows on Rum. Stay on the worn line where possible, avoid soft burrowed ground and do not let dogs disturb nesting areas.

Do I need scrambling experience to climb Askival on Rum?
Yes, you do. Hallival's north ridge has exposed sections that need hands-on scrambling, and you'll have to reverse the same steep ground on your way back. If you're not comfortable with that, pick a different walk on Rum.
Can you avoid the Askival Pinnacle?
Yes, the route stays on the east side of the ridge to avoid the main Askival Pinnacle. That said, it's still rough, exposed mountain terrain—not a straightforward hill path.
Is it safe to climb Askival in wet weather?
