This GPX follows the classic out-and-back route from Galmisdale ferry pier to the 393 m summit of An Sgùrr, Eigg’s highest hill. The route measures 9.7 km, gains 388 m and has a GPX-derived walking-time estimate of 2 hours 35 minutes.
The recorded line leaves Galmisdale on the island track before turning onto the rougher path beneath An Sgùrr’s dramatic north face. It then climbs a grassy gully to gain the ridge, where a short rocky section leads towards the pitchstone summit. In clear weather, the crest opens wide views across Eigg, Rum, Muck, Skye and the mainland. Return by the same north-face route rather than attempting the steep eastern Nose.
Ground can be boggy on the approach, while the ridge is rocky and exposed with sheer drops near the summit. Wear grippy waterproof footwear, check the mountain forecast and ferry timetable, and carry food, water, waterproofs and an independent navigation backup. Allow extra time for wet ground, strong wind, poor visibility or stops on the summit.

Begin at the ferry pier and follow the signed island track inland. There is no visitor-car access on Eigg, so plan this walk around the ferry timetable.
Leave the main track at the cairned junction and take the rougher path towards An Sgùrr. The ground soon becomes wetter and less defined.
Follow the path beneath the dark pitchstone crags. Keep to the established northern approach and resist any temptation to climb towards the eastern Nose.
Climb the steep grassy gully to gain the ridge. A short rocky section requires hands-on care, especially when wet or windy.
Reach the 393 m summit and enjoy wide Small Isles views in clear weather. Stay well back from the sheer drops, then retrace the outward route to Galmisdale.
