Why does my hydration bladder tube freeze but not the water in the bladder?

The tube has a huge surface area relative to the tiny amount of water inside it, so cold air strips heat away quickly. Meanwhile, the bladder itself sits insulated against your back, protected by your pack and body heat, keeping that water liquid even when the tube is frozen solid.

How do I stop my hydration tube from freezing in winter?

Blow the water back into the reservoir after every single sip—this clears the tube so there's nothing left to freeze. You can also insulate the tube with foam sleeves, tuck it inside your jacket, start with warm water, and keep the bite valve protected during stops.

At what temperature does a hydration bladder tube freeze?

The bite valve usually freezes first around -5°C, depending on wind and conditions. With proper technique (blowing back after sips) and insulation, you might extend usable range to -10°C or so, but a long rest stop in wind can still freeze it solid.

Do You Actually Need That?

When Your Drinking Tube Freezes Before Your Water Does

That clever hands-free drinking tube works brilliantly until temperatures drop and you're left with frozen plumbing and no way to reach the water sloshing about in your pack.
