How steep can I go with microspikes before I need crampons?

Microspikes are generally safe up to about 15-20 degrees on low-consequence terrain. Beyond that angle, you need to change technique—kick steps or front-point—which microspikes simply can't support. If a slip means a long slide rather than just sitting down hard, you need crampons.

Can I use crampons with my regular hiking boots?

No, standard three-season walking boots are too flexible for crampons. You need at least B1-rated boots for strap-on crampons—the boot must be stiff enough to prevent the crampon from levering off when you're on steep ground. A crampon on a floppy boot can pop off at exactly the wrong moment.

Do You Actually Need That?

Microspikes Are Not Short Crampons

Q: What's the actual difference between microspikes and crampons?

Microspikes have short spikes (half an inch or less) on a flexible harness for walking upright on icy paths. Crampons have longer points (an inch or more) on a rigid frame that bites deep into hard snow and supports techniques needed on steep terrain where you can't just walk normally.
