Withins Height [Round Hill]

Rising above the Bronte Country moors near Hebden Bridge, this broad, peat-covered plateau offers a classic South Pennine experience. Its rounded summit, marked by a trig pillar, provides expansive views over the Worth Valley and across the dark, undulating gritstone edges that define the northern reaches of the Peak District.

• •The name "Withins" is a local dialect term derived from "withy," an Old English word for willow. While the high moor is now largely treeless heather, the name suggests that the cloughs and watercourses on its flanks were once lined with hardy willow scrub.
• •The hill's lower slopes are home to Top Withens, perhaps the most famous ruin in English literature. Though now a shell, this farmstead is widely accepted as the atmospheric setting for Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, drawing literary pilgrims from around the world.
• •This hill sits directly on the Great Pennine Watershed. Rain falling on the western slopes eventually reaches the Irish Sea via the River Ribble system, while water on the eastern side drains into the Worth Valley and out to the North Sea.
• •From the trig pillar, look north-west to spot the lonely silhouette of Pendle Hill across the Lancashire border, or turn south-east to see the 330-metre concrete needle of the Emley Moor transmitting station rising above the horizon.
• •Finding the absolute highest point of this sprawling moorland can be a matter of faith rather than physics, as one peat hag looks very much like another when the mist rolls in from the west.
