• •The name "Withins" is a local dialect term derived from "withy," an Old English word for willow. While the high moor is now largely treeless heather, the name suggests that the cloughs and watercourses on its flanks were once lined with hardy willow scrub.
• •The hill's lower slopes are home to Top Withens, perhaps the most famous ruin in English literature. Though now a shell, this farmstead is widely accepted as the atmospheric setting for Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights, drawing literary pilgrims from around the world.
• •This hill sits directly on the Great Pennine Watershed. Rain falling on the western slopes eventually reaches the Irish Sea via the River Ribble system, while water on the eastern side drains into the Worth Valley and out to the North Sea.
