About Stob a' Choire Leith

Marking the western end of the high Grey Corries ridge, this rugged Munro Top is defined by its pale, shattered quartzite terrain. It offers a spectacular vantage point for looking back along the serrated spine towards Stob Choire Claurigh, with the massive eastern bulk of Aonach Beag dominating the view to the west.

Did You Know?

  • The name is Scottish Gaelic for 'Peak of the Grey Corrie'. This refers to the vast quantities of light-coloured quartzite scree that carpet the slopes, giving the entire range its distinctive pale, almost snow-covered appearance when viewed from a distance.
  • It serves as the final high point on the western arm of the Stob Choire Claurigh massif before the ridge drops significantly towards the Lairig Leacach. It is an essential stop for walkers completing the full Grey Corries traverse, often cited as one of the finest ridge walks in the Highlands.
  • The summit provides a superior perspective of the Aonachs and the CMD Arête leading to Ben Nevis. On a clear day, the contrast between the pale rocks of the Corries and the dark, looming cliffs of the neighbouring Ben Nevis massif is particularly striking.
  • The terrain is exceptionally stony, consisting of fields of frost-shattered rock. These quartzite boulders are notoriously hard on boot leather and can become treacherous when wet, requiring constant attention to footwork even on the broader sections of the ridge.
  • Traversing these quartzite slopes has often been compared to walking across a giant pile of broken dinner plates; it is an experience that is frequently as loud on the ears as it is taxing on the knees.
