Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic 'Stob Coire Chlamhraidh', meaning 'Peak of the Corrie of Wrangling' or 'Brawling'. It is thought to refer to the noisy, turbulent winds that are frequently funnelled through the steep-sided corries below the summit ridge.
  • The mountain is the highest point of the Grey Corries range. It is composed of Cambrian quartzite, a hard, white rock that gives the entire ridge its distinctive pale appearance, making it easily identifiable from as far away as the A9 or the summit of Ben Nevis.
  • The summit offers a particularly clear perspective of the 'Rough Bounds' of Knoydart to the northwest and the long, shimmering expanse of Loch Treig to the southeast.
  • Most walkers tackle the peak as the start or finish of the classic Grey Corries traverse, a high-level journey that links this summit with Stob Coire an Laoigh and Sgùrr Choinnich Mòr over several miles of continuous, narrow ridge.
  • While the ridge provides excellent footing, the descent toward the Lairig Leacach is a sustained lesson in the specific friction coefficients of loose quartzite rubble; it is the kind of terrain that makes a walker deeply appreciative of their boot manufacturers and their own sense of balance.
