About Stob Dearg [Taynuilt Peak]

Often overshadowed by its neighbor, Ben Cruachan, this rugged Munro Top offers a more secluded perspective on the Argyll landscape. Characterised by steep, bouldery slopes and a sharp granite profile, the summit provides a dramatic vantage point over Loch Etive and the western seaboard towards the Isle of Mull.

Did You Know?

  • The Gaelic name Stob Dearg translates as 'Red Peak', likely a reference to the warm hue of the Cruachan granite when caught in the evening light. Its alternative name, the Taynuilt Peak, reflects its position directly overlooking the village of Taynuilt to the west.
  • It is most frequently reached via the classic Cruachan Horseshoe, a high-level circuit starting from the Falls of Cruachan. The approach from the main summit involves an exhilarating traverse along a narrow, rocky ridge that requires a steady head in high winds.
  • From this western outpost, the view is dominated by the long, sea-loch finger of Loch Etive snaking northwards into the hills of Glen Etive, while the surrounding massif of the Cruachan range provides a jagged, high-altitude skyline to the east.
  • Despite being higher than the vast majority of Munros, its proximity to the slightly loftier Ben Cruachan means it must settle for the secondary status of a Munro Top—a distinction that matters deeply to logbooks but very little to your legs during the final ascent.
