About Sgurr na Ba Glaise

Rising steeply above the northern shores of Loch Shiel, this rugged Corbett is the central peak of the magnificent Rois-bheinn trilogy. It offers a true Highland wilderness experience, defined by steep, grassy slopes and craggy ridges that reward the long approach with an expansive Atlantic panorama over the Small Isles and Skye.

Did You Know?

  • The name translates from Scottish Gaelic as the 'Peak of the Grey Cow.' While many Scottish peaks are named for livestock, this likely refers to the specific silvery-grey hue of the weathered schist and pale grasses found across its upper slopes.
  • It is most commonly climbed as part of the Rois-bheinn horseshoe, a demanding circuit starting from Alisary on the shores of Loch Ailort that bags three Corbetts in a single, high-level traverse.
  • From the summit, the view west is exceptional, looking directly over the Sound of Arisaig toward the distinct silhouettes of the Small Isles—Eigg, Rum, and Muck—emerging from the Atlantic.
  • Despite its proximity to the coast, the hill feels deeply inland when looking east, where the massive bulk of Ben Nevis and the jagged Mamores dominate the horizon beyond the long reach of Loch Shiel.
  • The 'grey cow' of the name is arguably the most cooperative bovine in Moidart; unlike the local livestock, she stays perfectly still while you struggle up her steep, pathless northern flank.
