About Sgurr Gaorsaic

Tucked away in the remote Kintail hinterland, this rugged Corbett offers a genuine sense of isolation. Often overlooked in favour of neighbouring Munros, its pathless slopes and rocky crest provide a quiet, wild experience. The summit grants an exceptional perspective into the deep, uninhabited troughs of Glen Elchaig and Upper Glen Cannich.

Did You Know?

  • The name derives from the Gaelic Sgùrr Gaorsaic, which translates roughly as the 'Peak of Shuddering' or 'Bristling'. This likely refers to the jagged appearance of its rocky outcrops or the exposed, wind-swept nature of its high ridge.
  • Sitting at the head of Glen Elchaig, the hill occupies a pivotal spot between the Kintail and Glen Affric mountains. It is almost entirely surrounded by higher peaks, most notably the massive Sgùrr nan Ceathreamhnan to the west.
  • From the summit, you get a privileged look at the remote northern faces of the Mullach na Dheiragain ridge and the deep, watery expanse of Loch Mullardoch stretching away to the east.
  • The approach from the south via the Bealach Gaorsaic is notoriously sodden; even in a dry summer, the ground here retains water with a persistence that challenges the best waterproofed boots.
  • It is a mountain that demands commitment; by the time you reach its base, you are already so far from a metalled road that the ascent feels like a minor footnote to the epic journey required just to see it.
