About Sgurr Fhuar-thuill

Sitting at the western end of the high Strathfarrar ridge, this Munro provides a sense of deep isolation. It is typically reached via the private road through Glen Strathfarrar. The summit offers a spectacular perspective over the wild Loch Monar towards the remote giants of Lurg Mhòr and Sgùrr Choinnich.

Did You Know?

  • The name is derived from the Gaelic Sgùrr Fhuar-thuill, meaning 'Peak of the Cold Hollow'. This likely refers to the deep, north-facing corrie of Toll a' Mhuic—the Pig's Hollow—which sits directly beneath the summit and retains snow well into the summer months.
  • It is almost always climbed as the final peak in the 'Strathfarrar Four', a celebrated high-level traverse that also includes Sgurr a' Choire Ghlais, Sgurr na Ruaidhe, and Carn nan Gobhar.
  • Access to the hill is famously governed by the gate at the entrance to Glen Strathfarrar. Because the glen road is private, vehicle access is restricted to specific hours and a limited number of cars per day, making it one of the few hills in Scotland that requires a morning appointment.
  • Looking north from the summit cairn, the terrain descends into the vast, uninhabited emptiness of Glen Orrin. From this vantage point, there is no higher ground visible until the Fannichs, which lie roughly 25 kilometres to the northwest.
  • The estate’s gate-opening times are more strictly observed than a Swiss train schedule; arrive five minutes late at the end of the day, and you may find your car spending a very peaceful, lonely night behind the bars.
